Before I Sleep

Filed under: Adventures — Sabri @ 10:51 am

I fiddle around with my trusty iPod touch. My house has wifi network so I can pretty much do almost everything that I want before sleeping.

One of my hobby is exploring Apple Apps Store. Tonight, I saw some personality test that looks credible (unlike Facebook quizzes), so I dowloaded and took one.

The result:

1) You fall in love easily.
2) You need to hear from your loved one everyday.
3) You expect to give 85% and receive 15% in the relationship.

Very true I can say.

Good night! πŸ™‚

A Road Trip to Tronoh

Filed under: Adventures — Sabri @ 9:56 am

Again, the Maxis Broadband that we have in the house are so horribly slow it could not open the add new post section on my blog on the laptop. Hence I am writing this on my trusty itouch.

This Friday I planned to make a quick dash to Tronoh. I need to submit all the paperwork related to my internship and do proper clearance as a 1st step to conclude my life as an undergraduate. That same evening my parents will arrive from Kuantan (hopefully as my dad has just been warded today) and later that night Kak Ana will be back.

That’s mean I need to be back in KL by 6 pm because I need to arrange for accomodation for everyone before they landed. My dad and my sister are the two biggest diva in the family and I need to make sure all their logistical need are addressed to avoid what supposed to be a happy family time become a grouchy one.

I am not excited in the prospect of having to complete all the necessary report in 4 days. But I am thrilled for the roadtrip. It’s been a long time since I drive long distance and KL-Perak is definitely a good journey (similar to Perak-Penang)

KL-Kuantan is tiring and not as enjoyable (there is no Baskin Robbin & KFC at the R&R). Plus I have some unforgetabble sweet memories with these routes. They are very familiar as I have drove on them in all imaginable conditions. On a sunny day, on a rainy day and of course on a sleepy night (literally AND really!)

Most of the time risking my life for a very foolish cause if viewed in retrospect. Driving ALONE at 4 am after driving almost non stop for the whole day? What I am thinking about at that time?

But driving along that route make me feel younger (I am still young now if you don’t notice), so carefree and so happy. I am also very happy right now, but these route has a special sentimental value for me.

It fill a void in me which I have been trying to fill for sometime already.

And for this reason, my heart beat faster while Friday become closer. I am just hoping that all the paperwork are done by that time.

Secrets In Getting Everything That You Want From Life

Filed under: Life Skills — Sabri @ 5:24 am

Somebody tell me (and I believe somebody else tell her that), I always get what I want in life.

I am not too proud of it because it’s bordering “takbur”, but yeah, I silently want to believe so.

First, I like to clarify that I get what I want not because I was born with a silver spoon in mouth or because I have a shit load of money I can do anything I want about it. I got what I want from life because I worked hard to get it and because I let nothing stop me from getting it. Sometimes I am strategic, most of the time I just steamrolled my way.

It help also by having a small list of what you want (I don’t want fancy cars, flashy gadgets etc).

I don’t like being told I can’t do something for whatsoever reason that is beyond my control.

If I really want to do something and was told for whatsoever reason that is beyond my control I can’t, you can bet I will find a way to do it. Sometimes it might cost me a little bit more, most of the time I have to be a little bit more resourceful to find a better way to get around the blocking wall.

Randy Pausch in his final lecture says that the wall is not there to stop you. The wall is there to stop people who are not deserving and people who do not really want what they are after.

I do not give up.

A lot of people give crappy excuse why they can’t and why they don’t deserve something.

I hate people like these. They are not only tormenting themselves but they are also being unfair to others. I don’t care if people like this do harm to themselves, but I am riled up if it affect others which they sure will do.

On a related story. I plan to visit the Angkor Watt temple this August with my housemates. I have even booked the flight ticket and hotel. Two days ago I just realize that the date clash with my convocation ceremony date.

No big deal, I will have to cancel the trip. But deep in my heart, I know I still want to go there, if I can’t go then, I will go now. I don’t want the convocation become the wall that stop me from going to Cambodia. Its very pathetic!

Then I started checking the available dates. My heart want to go this month (because Ramadhan starts in August). But my head says its not a wise choice. My sister is coming home and everyone in my family will come to KL. Effectively we will be having a short vacation in KL. Two vacations in a month sounds too much, what more if I am the one who will be paying for both.

So last night I slept promising myself to follow my head and not my heart.

This morning, my heart acted up. I should not go in July. But I can still go in August, September or next year! So I checked the available date, I found out that early August, there is another irresistible deal for a trip to Siem Reap (angkor watt). I make a quick analysis with my head and my head could not find any credible objection.

I did not give up. A clash on date does not mean I should give up on my plan. When you really want something, doors will somehow open up for you.

So Angkor Watt, I am still coming this August!

Notes From Friends and Lovers

Filed under: Lessons on Love — Sabri @ 8:07 am

Sometimes I think friendship is better than loves. On the wall beside my bed is a frame containing notes from my friends about me. It was voluntary and written only because they feel I have somehow touch their life. I was blessed to read their kind, honest and sincere words.

I use to have similar notes written by someone I used to love (luckily I don’t frame it)

What I figure out is your lovers can make a u turn and suddenly say that she never ever meant what she wrote (although it was documented again and again and again for few years) and you can do nothing about it. And you have to finally resigned to the fact that you have lose her.

[singlepic id=17 w=320 h=240 float=center]

Plus you have to bear in mind that all the notes, letters and emails are useless because the writer herself has no integrity that usually what cause the relationship to crumble in the 1st place.

But with friends, I believe this rarely happened. They have no motive to make you feel good and document it and if they do, you can indeed be sure that they are genuine.

Plus if a 10+ people consistently saying the same traits they see in you, you can be sure that it is true. Later on in life, one or two might have their integrity compromised, but definitely not all.

Lots of love and gratitude,

Sabri

When They Know No Better

Filed under: Life Skills — Sabri @ 9:17 am
1. Don’t believe it when people tell you, you are not worthy of something good. This weekend, I have experienced a wonderful personal breakthrough (a personal note for myself is here). But for you, I will leave you with an analogy.

If your school teacher said you are stupid, don’t believe him. I make a mistake when I did. Although externally I am denying it and consistently telling myself I am not but internally I was resigned to accept that label.

Until this weekend when 2 professors tell me that I am clever and they want me to do an open heart surgery on them. At that moment I discover, “Hey, I am not stupid! If I am stupid, these professors won’t allow me to operate them”.

This is just an analogy (I don’t want to sound shallow repeating my sad story over and over again, hence I use a smart, meaningful analogy). My teacher in this story might be your teacher, parents, wife or girlfriend. Whatever it is do not settle for what they assume you can achieve, always strive to maximize your potential.

2. I learned a lot from my weekend retreat in Bali. A lot of it was personal and some of them are very powerful that make me think, rethink and adjust my life values & priorities.

If you notice, I started another section in this blog called “An empowering notes to myself“. Some of the notes are too personal to be publish publicly, I have to password protect it.

However, do not worry. Whenever I learned a lessons that I think can benefit you, I will share.

Some of you might think, “What Sabri is thinking about? He has achieve something quite significantly in a relatively young age”.

Very true and agreed.

But in this world there are a lot of things you can do and excel at. I am not looking for achievement anymore, its in my DNA already. I am seeking for more fulfillment and significance now.

And if you are like my sister, Sabriza you might have an easy answer for this. But no.

I am not looking for THAT type of answer. I am looking for a more specific, step by step answer that can fulfill me. Fulfillment is a lot of things. And Sabriza, I DO truly know what you want to say. Don’t.

Lots of love

One Picture Tells a Thousand Words

Filed under: Adventures,Lessons on Love — Sabri @ 4:41 am

I have been told once before (a few years ago), I look lonely in my pictures. I was alone and I don’t have many pictures with my friends. Well, I have forgotten who said that to me, but I do remember the quote. I never give a thought about it and don’t think people care about such trivial matter, but apparently someone does!

I don’t care much actually. But today I will post a sort of team photo of me with my friends (some colleagues are not in the office).

sabriandfriends

This is the best team and company (on 2nd thought, it might be the 2nd. Because mine will be the 1stΒ  πŸ˜‰Β  ) I ever worked with (I admit I did not has experiences working with another company).Β  Just to give you an idea, they are in the top 100 SME in Malaysia (Missed the top 50 SME awards by a few points) and THE ONLY COMPANY in Asia that won the World Democratic Workplace Award (2 times in a row)

I do my internship here and I learned a tonne. If there is one mistake I make about this company, it is UNDERESTIMATING them. I thought they pay well (because they are a US company).

But hell no.

They pay quite well, but that’s not all.

They are brilliant, amazing, awesome people. I never had 35 awesome, kind hearted, successful, smart, fun people surround me AT THE SAME TIME before (at most, there will be 10-20).

During this internship, I learned a lot. Not only the technical stuff (I learned how to use MAC Book), but also things that are much bigger than that such as life skills etc.

And no. This is not your regular life lessons that you learned from your average senior at the office. They are extraordinarily awesome, eccentric (so like me). They are the proof that you can be street smart and book smart at the same time.

I am grateful I accidentally found out that their HQ is in Malaysia a year ago (know them for a few years already, but never know that they operate from Malaysia). And I am grateful UTP has 8 months compulsory internship requirement. Which without, I might never experience life here.

*This is the team pictures with John Assaraf. One of the teacher in The Secret Movie, and an accomplished author.
