Notes From Friends and Lovers

Sometimes I think friendship is better than loves. On the wall beside my bed is a frame containing notes from my friends about me. It was voluntary and written only because they feel I have somehow touch their life. I was blessed to read their kind, honest and sincere words.

I use to have similar notes written by someone I used to love (luckily I don’t frame it)

What I figure out is your lovers can make a u turn and suddenly say that she never ever meant what she wrote (although it was documented again and again and again for few years) and you can do nothing about it. And you have to finally resigned to the fact that you have lose her.

Plus you have to bear in mind that all the notes, letters and emails are useless because the writer herself has no integrity that usually what cause the relationship to crumble in the 1st place.

But with friends, I believe this rarely happened. They have no motive to make you feel good and document it and if they do, you can indeed be sure that they are genuine.

Plus if a 10+ people consistently saying the same traits they see in you, you can be sure that it is true. Later on in life, one or two might have their integrity compromised, but definitely not all.

Lots of love and gratitude,

Sabri

When They Know No Better

1. Don’t believe it when people tell you, you are not worthy of something good. This weekend, I have experienced a wonderful personal breakthrough (a personal note for myself is here). But for you, I will leave you with an analogy.

If your school teacher said you are stupid, don’t believe him. I make a mistake when I did. Although externally I am denying it and consistently telling myself I am not but internally I was resigned to accept that label.

Until this weekend when 2 professors tell me that I am clever and they want me to do an open heart surgery on them. At that moment I discover, “Hey, I am not stupid! If I am stupid, these professors won’t allow me to operate them”.

This is just an analogy (I don’t want to sound shallow repeating my sad story over and over again, hence I use a smart, meaningful analogy). My teacher in this story might be your teacher, parents, wife or girlfriend. Whatever it is do not settle for what they assume you can achieve, always strive to maximize your potential.

2. I learned a lot from my weekend retreat in Bali. A lot of it was personal and some of them are very powerful that make me think, rethink and adjust my life values & priorities.

If you notice, I started another section in this blog called “An empowering notes to myself“. Some of the notes are too personal to be publish publicly, I have to password protect it.

However, do not worry. Whenever I learned a lessons that I think can benefit you, I will share.

Some of you might think, “What Sabri is thinking about? He has achieve something quite significantly in a relatively young age”.

Very true and agreed.

But in this world there are a lot of things you can do and excel at. I am not looking for achievement anymore, its in my DNA already. I am seeking for more fulfillment and significance now.

And if you are like my sister, Sabriza you might have an easy answer for this. But no.

I am not looking for THAT type of answer. I am looking for a more specific, step by step answer that can fulfill me. Fulfillment is a lot of things. And Sabriza, I DO truly know what you want to say. Don’t.

Lots of love

One Picture Tells a Thousand Words

I have been told once before (a few years ago), I look lonely in my pictures. I was alone and I don’t have many pictures with my friends. Well, I have forgotten who said that to me, but I do remember the quote. I never give a thought about it and don’t think people care about such trivial matter, but apparently someone does!

I don’t care much actually. But today I will post a sort of team photo of me with my friends (some colleagues are not in the office).

sabriandfriends

This is the best team and company (on 2nd thought, it might be the 2nd. Because mine will be the 1stย  ๐Ÿ˜‰ย  ) I ever worked with (I admit I did not has experiences working with another company).ย  Just to give you an idea, they are in the top 100 SME in Malaysia (Missed the top 50 SME awards by a few points) and THE ONLY COMPANY in Asia that won the World Democratic Workplace Award (2 times in a row)

I do my internship here and I learned a tonne. If there is one mistake I make about this company, it is UNDERESTIMATING them. I thought they pay well (because they are a US company).

But hell no.

They pay quite well, but that’s not all.

They are brilliant, amazing, awesome people. I never had 35 awesome, kind hearted, successful, smart, fun people surround me AT THE SAME TIME before (at most, there will be 10-20).

During this internship, I learned a lot. Not only the technical stuff (I learned how to use MAC Book), but also things that are much bigger than that such as life skills etc.

And no. This is not your regular life lessons that you learned from your average senior at the office. They are extraordinarily awesome, eccentric (so like me). They are the proof that you can be street smart and book smart at the same time.

I am grateful I accidentally found out that their HQ is in Malaysia a year ago (know them for a few years already, but never know that they operate from Malaysia). And I am grateful UTP has 8 months compulsory internship requirement. Which without, I might never experience life here.

Saya Mahu Wawasan 2020

Rupa-rupanya jangkaan saya meleset. Keluar pula “One Malaysia” atau Satu Malaysia.

Ok, ok. Mungkinlah setiap PM nak ada legasi sendiri. Oklah, bagi markah kesian lagi.

Tapi semenjak dua menjak ni, GLC-GLC yang entah apa tujuannya tiba-tiba nak ikut. One Maybank (saya tak tahu apa mesejnya, tapi nombor satu dan Maybank kelihatan sekali dalam iklan televisyen)

Fine. Mungkin kebetulan.

Tetapi sebentar tadi saya terlihat satu lagi iklan, “One MH” (Malaysia Airline- MAS)

What the heck?

MAS? You are struggling to survive the recession, regional competition and what not, you pun nak menghabiskan duit untuk nonsense korporat branding ni?

Tolonglah…

Saya (dan saya rasa ramai lagi orang di luar sana), saya tak nak Islam Hadhari, saya tak nak Satu Malaysia whatever. Apa bendanya benda ni semua? Tolonglah. Kalau setakat nak make up-make up, lebih baik tak payah. No concrete action.

Katalah kita bagi benefit of the doubt pada One Malaysia. Untuk menyatu padukan rakyat Malaysia (yang frankly I think not that serious kalau tindakan konkrit di ambil~saya pernah membesar di dalam suasana multi racial dan juga ultra Malay. Jadi saya tahu). Katalah One Malaysia ni satu konsep yang bagus. Katalah.

Menghabiskan beras sahaja.ย

Lagi bagus.

Wanted : An Adik Angkat for July Till October

I am writing this post while lying on my bed. Obviously I am not using a computer, so my apology if it’s shorter than usual. Suddenly feel like in the mood to jot down something.

ANECDOTE ONE

I spoke to my sister tonight for about 17 minutes (spending RM 17 in the process). It’s ironic actually. We talked a lot on the phone and she is more than willing to call me while she is in the UK. But I betcha, when she is in Malaysia, she will not call me even once although it is far cheaper. She will be busy shopping, gossipping and what not with her buddies.

So in anticipation for Sabriza’s homecoming this July, there will be one empty slot for someone else to be my ‘sister’. Anybody is looking for a charming and kind hearted ‘abang angkat’? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Kindly leave your phone number in the comment section.

ANECDOTE TWO

My sister made me realize that a lot of people did not have a good conversational skill. Here’s a tip.

When speaking with someone you did not know well enough, but would like to strike a good rapport with him or her, always treat the conversation as a ping pong game.

Always ask open ended questions and when answering a questions, always counter questions the person. Never let them feel like they are interogating you. Do not give a conclusive answer, instead answer just enough so that the other person can pick on the answer and asked another questions.

This is true and applicable in real conversations, emails or even SMS.

You will start to notice how easy it is to have a good and enjoyable conversation with more people. ๐Ÿ˜‰
